English Language Instructor

JOB SUMMARY

This July, Briercrest is hosting a summer English language program/camp for a group of Korean high school students from Wanbang School in Harbin, China. As an EAL Instructor for our 5-week summer program, you will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging English language lessons to students who are non-native English speakers. Your role will involve creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students can develop their English language skills through interactive activities, cultural exploration, and language immersion experiences. The job is for 6 weeks, as the first week is prep for the classes. The position begins on June 24th and ends on August 2nd. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, English as a Second Language (ESL), Applied Linguistics, or related field.
  • TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification preferred.
  • Previous experience teaching English language learners, preferably in a summer program or intensive language program setting.
  • Strong understanding of language acquisition theories and best practices in language teaching
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness, with an appreciation for the needs and backgrounds of EAL learners.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and adaptability in designing and delivering language instruction.

DESIRED OUTCOMES AND ACTIVITIES

  • Actively support and promote the Briercrest College & Seminary vision and mission.
  • Deliver effective English language instruction through speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities, focusing on vocabulary expansion, grammar structures, pronunciation, and fluency development.
  • Plan and prepare daily lessons that are interactive, engaging, and aligned with program objectives, incorporating a variety of teaching methodologies such as communicative language teaching, task-based learning, and language games.
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments, providing constructive feedback to students and monitoring their language development throughout the program.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs and proficiency levels of students, providing additional support and challenges as necessary to ensure all students can achieve their learning goals.
  • Integrate cultural elements into the curriculum to enhance students' understanding of English language usage in real-life contexts, fostering cultural awareness and appreciation.
  • Collaborate with program coordinators, fellow teachers, and support staff to ensure a cohesive and enriching learning experience for students, participating in regular team meetings.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning, managing behavior effectively and promoting mutual respect and cooperation among students.
  • Communicate regularly with students and program administrators to provide updates on student progress, address concerns, and solicit feedback for program improvement.

TEAM RELATIONSHIPS

The EAL Instructors will work closely with Angela Lim, Director of International students, as well as each other to build and plan solid lesson plans. Thet will report to Angela Lim and she is there to guide and assist in delivering the classroom curriculum.
