Despite great shooting, men's basketball falls in Home Opener

The Briercrest men’s basketball team hosted the SAIT Trojans Saturday, Oct. 29 for the Briercrest Basketball Home Opener.

Briercrest shot well for the day, hitting 51.9% of their shots, 38.1% from beyond the three-point line and all 10 of their free-throws!

Ben Kornelson opened the scoring for Briercrest early on in the game. John Smith from SAIT then scored a three-pointer. Briercrest then pulled ahead to a 7-3 lead. However, shortly after SAIT pulled ahead, and by 6:53 the score was 10-9 for SAIT. SAIT pulled further ahead during the first quarter to 16-9, but Briercrest started to score again and by the end of first quarter the score was 29-22 for SAIT.

Brian Tolentino scored the first basket of the second quarter with a three-pointer. Briercrest quickly progressed to tie SAIT at 31-31. The game then stayed tied while climbing through the numbers 39-39 which SAIT then broke taking the lead up to 54-42 the end of second quarter.

Brandon Tolentino scored the first basket in the third quarter for Briercrest. Briercrest started to come back and was only 10 points behind but then SAIT started to pull ahead again. SAIT pulled ahead until the score was 66-48. The end score of the third quarter was 70-52 for SAIT

Brian Tolentino scored the first basket in the fourth quarter, and both teams slowly rose in points. By halfway through the quarter the score was 86-65 for SAIT. The final score of the game was 92-74 for SAIT.

Player of the game for Briercrest was Brandon Tolentino who had a team high 20 points.

Briercrest stat leaders were Zak Tamlin with eight rebounds, Ethan DaSilva with six assists and Ben Kornelsen with the lone block of the game.
