Briercrest women's and men’s varsity volleyball teams hosted Calgary’s Ambrose Lions in their home opener Friday and Saturday. Friday started off with two quick games- they defeated both of Ambrose’s men’s and women’s team in three sets.

On Saturday, the women’s game was set to start at one o’clock. Ambrose started with the serve, but in a fierce play at the net by Ashley Zacharias they lost the point. The set started off quickly, with Briercrest slowly pulling away with the lead. Janae Rappley scored six points off of her killer spin serve, putting Briercrest effectively ahead. Throughout the set they maintained their lead, finishing with a score of 25-18.

Alicia Sawatzky started the second set off with the serve. Sam Zacharias pulled away with three aces off of her spin serve and five points in total, giving Briercrest an early lead in the set. Karina Peterson was an absolute wall at the net, shutting down the middle time and time again. Alicia Sawatzky finished off the set with an ace, with a score of 25-18.

At the beginning of the third set, the score was neck and neck. Sam Zacharias got the point back with a roll down the line. Throughout the set Ambrose maintained a slight lead by no more than two or three points. Briercrest climbed back up to tie with Ambrose at 22-22, forcing them to call a timeout. The game finished with a tight score of 27-25 for the Briercrest women’s team.

The player of the game was #4 Ashley Zacharias with 6 digs, 4 kills, 29 assists and 1 ace for Briercrest.
