Softball sees improved play in Saturday losses

The Briercrest women’s softball team continues to look for their first WCSA win of the season as they fell 17-0 to undefeated University of Saskatchewan and 4-0 to SAIT on Saturday, Sept. 10. They then lost 8-4 in a comeback that fell short in an exhibition game against Dawson Community College.

The Briercrest women’s softball team ran into a wall to start the Saturday morning of competition as they hosted the University of Saskatchewan. The University of Saskatchewan continued their winning ways in a 17-0 victory over Briercrest. Laura Vogt pitched all four innings for Briercrest in the loss. Saskatchewan used a strong third inning where they scored the majority of their runs to continue their undefeated record in the WCSA thus far this season.

Makenna Martin pitched a gem against SAIT in a pitchers’ duel in the 2:00 pm 4-0 loss for Briercrest. She pitched the full seven innings and only had one earned run on five hits and five strikeouts and three walks. She held SAIT to no runs until the third inning where she allowed the first run of the game. Briercrest was led at the plate by Laura Vogt and Deana Syrenne who each had two hits on three plate appearances. Briercrest had six hits in the game but had five errors and SAIT only had two.

After falling behind 6-0 in the first inning to Dawson Community College, Alexis Ferguson helped calm the team down by pitching three scoreless innings. Down 7-0 in the fourth inning, Sophie Mayerle hit a homerun and Alexis Ferguson came home off a walk, stolen base, throwing error and hit by Bryann Seib to cut the score to to 7-2 after four innings. Briercrest added to their lead in the fifth inning with consecutive doubles by Sarah Richards, Laura Vogt and Mayerle cut the lead to 7-4. Dawson got one more run to end the game at 8-4.
