Women’s volleyball to RDC for ACAC championships, basketball to RDC and hockey to NAIT

Posted: February 23, 2016

Post-season play kicks off this weekend in the ACAC as the Briercrest women’s volleyball team travel to Red Deer for the ACAC championships. The hockey team will be travelling to Edmonton to face undefeated NAIT this weekend to finish off the season while the basketball teams will be playing Saturday and Sunday games in Red Deer.

Volleyball

The Briercrest women’s volleyball team will be travelling to Red Deer College this weekend for the 2015-16 ACAC championships. The weekend begins with the ACAC Awards banquet at 6:30 pm Wednesday, February 24. The women’s volleyball team finished the regular season in first place in the ACAC South with an ACAC program best 19-5 record, and a CCAA ranking of fourth in Canada. They will be facing ACAC North fourth place Keyano College (13-11) at 8:00 pm Thursday, Feb. 25. The winner of that game will play in the championship semi-final Friday, Feb. 26 at 7:00 pm against the winner of Red Deer and Grande Prairie, while the losers will play in the consolation bracket at 2:00 pm. The ACAC championship game will be at 3:30 pm on Saturday, Feb. 27. Both teams who qualify for the championship game will qualify for the CCAA nationals at Holland College in Charlottetown, PEI March 9-12.

The games will be streamed online at acac.tv.

The men’s volleyball team (11-13) swept Ambrose University this past weekend and ended the season one win out of the playoffs and are in off-season recovery, training and recruiting mode.

Hockey

The Briercrest hockey team heads to Edmonton this weekend to face the undefeated NAIT Ooks (30-0-0) to end the 2015-16 ACAC season. This will be a stiff test for the Briercrest hockey team as the closest that NAIT has come to losing this season were overtime victories over second place Augustana and fourth place MacEwan. Briercrest will look to finish the season on a strong note as they try to keep a high powered NAIT offense that boast eight of the top 11 point getters in the ACAC in check. NAIT has the top offense (177 goals to MacEwan’s 120) and best defense in the league (57 goals against to Augustana’s 74), so this will be a good challenge for Briercrest to see what kind of progress they have made this season as they build for the future.

Basketball

The Briercrest basketball teams will be travelling to Red Deer to finish their 2015-16 ACAC basketball season this weekend. With Red Deer hosting the ACAC women’s volleyball championships this weekend, the games will be played Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. The Red Deer women (7-12) are in sixth place in the ACAC South and Briercrest (2-17) sit behind them in seventh place and look to end the season on a winning note. The Red Deer men (14-5) are in a dog fight in the ACAC South standings, tied for first place, but only one win ahead of fourth place Lethbridge! The Briercrest men’s basketball team (2-17) have been playing in close games against almost every opponent this season and look to play spoiler this weekend. Saturday tip-off is 6:00 pm for the women and 8:00 pm for the men, while Sunday game times are 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm respectively.

Games will be streamed online at acac.tv.
