Hockey and basketball host “Make Some Noise for Mental Health;” volleyball on a bye

Posted: February 3, 2016

It’s a busy weekend with Briercrest Athletics this weekend as they host the ACAC “Make Some Noise for Mental Health” at both basketball and hockey this weekend. Hockey hosts Augustana this weekend for their final home weekend of the ACAC season. Basketball will be hosting St. Mary’s University and volleyball will have a bye weekend.

Hockey

The Briercrest hockey team will face a stiff test this weekend for their final home weekend of the 2015-16 ACAC season as they host Augustana (16-3-2-3). Augustana currently sits quite comfortably in second place in the ACAC with four weekends remaining in the season. Briercrest will also be honouring their fifth-year graduating student-athletes, Josh Dufresne, Taylor Epp and Brennan Gasmo, after the game on Saturday. Briercrest is coming off an exciting road trip where they played spoiler and took three of a possible four points from Portage College.  They will play Friday, February 5 at 7:00 pm, followed by a 2:00 pm puck drop on Saturday.

Basketball

The Briercrest basketball teams will be hosting St. Mary’s this weekend. The two St. Mary’s teams are going different directions in the standings this year. The St. Mary’s men (3-11) are in seventh place in the ACAC South and two wins by Briercrest (2-11) would put them into last place with three weekends left in the regular season. The St. Mary’s women (11-3) are in second place in the ACAC South division and will be a hard test for the Briercrest women’s team (2-11). Friday tip-off is 6:00 pm for the women and 8:00 pm for the men, while Saturday game times are 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm respectively.

There will also be a short “Make Some Noise for Mental Health” presentation at half-time of the men’s game on Friday night.

Volleyball

The Briercrest volleyball teams will have a bye this weekend before finishing their regular seasons by travelling to Lethbridge and hosting Ambrose. The Briercrest men’s team (8-12) is fighting for a playoff position and will need to count on teams to lose in order to make the playoffs. The Briercrest women (16-4) have been in first place in the ACAC South all season, but two SAIT wins this weekend would put them in a first place tie with Briercrest. It is sure to be an exciting end to the regular season!
