Sara Kurath (Forward - #10) goes nowhere without her smile. Whether it be in practices or in games, Sara plays the game of basketball with great joy and skill. Graduating from Yale Secondary in Abbottsford as a multi-sport athlete (basketball, volleyball, rugby, ultimate Frisbee), she went on to play basketball at both Kwantlen College and Fraser Valley University before joining Briercrest this year.

Academically, Sara came to Briercrest to complete her Business degree. She was particularly attracted to come here because of the testimony of other players who told her about the special and unique environment provided to students here at Caronport. Believing the school and the coaching staff to be a good fit for her needs, Sara made the big move from the Fraser Valley. And she has not regretted her decision for a moment. She was also excited about the opportunity to play again with her old high school team-mate Hannah Klassen.

With her post-secondary playing experience and her tireless work ethic, Sara has instantly emerged as a verbal and statistical leader on the team. She is averaging 10 points per game, and leading the team with most steals and fewest turnovers amongst starters. Even though she is a pure post player, Sara handles the ball very well in the open court. She also readily serves as an advocate for younger players who need to work through issues involved in their transition to college athletics.

What Sara appreciates most about Briercrest is the loving and caring atmosphere of the women’s basketball program and the school in general. She loves the intimate nature of the campus.

“The professors make every individual student feel important,” Kurath said. “It’s so nice to have people looking out for you and taking an interest in you personally.”

She grins when speaking about her teammates.

“Everyone gets along so well,” she exclaimed. “We will do anything for each other. It’s also great that there are never any lasting hard feelings after the grind of practice. Each player believes that everyone else has the best intentions for each other at heart.”

Sara’s heartfelt desire is to get better every day on the court and to continue working hard so she can make a genuine and positive contribution to the team’s growing success. Looking to the future, after completing her Business degree, Sara hopes one day to own her own clothing business.  She would also love to play a role in spreading the Gospel worldwide through her growing Christian faith. She loves the idea of using her life and talents to help others in need.
