Mens Volleyball battles hard but falls to Medicine Hat in three

Briercrest men’s volleyball took on Medicine Hat in the Saturday afternoon in Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium.

Briercrest battled hard throughout the three sets against Medicine Hat (16-25, 20-25, 15-25).

The match started off with Medicine Hat coming on strong. They took an early lead causing Briercrest to call timeout at 5-11. Unable to gain momentum, Briercrest started to fall further behind. Briercrest then started to chip away at the score to try and close the gap. Medicine Hat kept their lead until the end allowing them to claim their first set win with a score of 25-16.

Briercrest started off the second set by trailing behind Medicine Hat by only a point or two. Briercrest kept the ball moving around the court well making for an intense set. Medicine Hat then started to pull ahead though, causing Briercrest call timeout at 19-16. Briercrest couldn’t close the gap, which gave Medicine Hat their second set win of 25-20.

Medicine Hat took an early lead in the third set but Briercrest only trailed by a few points. Briercrest battled hard but continued to fall further behind. Near the end of the set they started to chip away at the score and close the gap a bit. Unfortunately, Briercrest was unable to gain the lead and lost the final set 15-25.

Taylor Klassen was awarded Player of the Game by Briercrest Executive Vice President and Provost, Ellery Pullman. Klassen had five digs and one service ace along with a team high of seven kills. Klassen also had a team high of one service ace alongside Carter Reimer and Mitch Erickson. Reimer also had a team high of 12 assists; Reimer and Calvin Sawatzky each had a team high of eight digs. Reimer, Erickson and Joel Rosewarm each had a team high of one block.

Medicine Hat defeated Briercrest in the stats category with 30-18 kills, 29-16 assists, 51-41 digs, and 6-3 blocks. Both teams had three service aces in the match.
