Womens basketball gets weekend sweep of Ambrose
Briercrest women’s basketball took on Ambrose again to try and sweep them for the weekend.
Briercrest came onto the court with the same high energy they started off with last night. They took an early lead in the first quarter by making key defensive plays such as seven steals. Briercrest capitalized on their free throws by sinking 14 of the 18 opportunities they had. This gave Briercrest a comfortable lead throughout the first quarter, giving them a score of 24-12.
Briercrest carried their momentum over into the second quarter allowing them to keep the lead. Briercrest called timeout at 39-21 to strategize and ensure they kept the lead. Ambrose started to close the gap a bit, but Briercrest saw this and responded by making great offensive plays. Three 3-pointers were made, two from Hannah Klassen to help further their lead. The end of the second half ended with a score of 49-28 for Briercrest.
Not ready to let up, Briercrest came into the second half with full force and ready to go. Briercrest continued to move the ball around well which put more pressure on Ambrose. Ambrose responded and started to close the gap a bit. Briercrest then called timeout at 56-46 to regroup. Briercrest came back on the court reenergized allowing them to pull further ahead again. The third quarter ended with a score of 68-47.
Briercrest came into the final quarter ready to finish off the game and claim their second win of the weekend. Briercrest continued to make hard shots under the net along with six steals. This allowed them to secure their lead until the final buzzer rang at 86-62.
Victoria Voth was awarded Player of the Game by Briercrest women’s volleyball coach, Nolan Wienmaster. Voth had 12 points, four assists, two rebounds and one steal in the game. Amy Wanvig had game highs of 14 rebounds and two blocks. Hannah Klassen had game highs of five three-pointers and 25 points. Sara Karuth and Klassen each had a game high of seven steals along with Lauren Jordan having a game high of 8 assists.
Briercrest swept the stats categories with 49-46 rebounds, 24-17 assists, 2-0 blocks, 21-12 steals and 6-4 three-pointers.
