Alex Bechtold is a physical force for Briercrest

Posted: November 21, 2015

The boards at Barkman arena shuddered a little when Strathmore, Alberta's Alex Bechtold committed to Briercrest this past summer. The 6'1" power forward has made his presence felt not only on the scoresheet but also on opponents unfortunate enough to find themselves in the crosshairs.

Alex comes to Briercrest after spending three successful years playing Junior "A" with several teams. One of his favourite stops was in Weyburn, where he was voted the most inspirational and most popular player. A clutch performer, his scoring stats jumped noticeably in his playoff appearances.

Alex is in his first year of a Bachelor of Arts in Education at Briercrest. Although he is not one to be trifled with on the ice, he has a gentle nature off of it and looks forward to teaching children one day.

He appreciates the opportunity here at Briercrest to get an excellent education while playing the sport he loves and being in a spiritually rich community.

"What brought me to Briercrest was the hockey as well as building a stronger foundation in my faith," says Alex. "As much as we want to win and be successful in our [hockey] season, we see becoming better men in life as just as important."

Alex has been a regular contributor in the lineup with his strong forechecking, hitting, and scoring.  He often plays on a line with Josh Anderson and Josiah Friesen and the trio regularly cause problems for the opposition with their strength and speed.

Alex's favourite moment with the team so far is being part of a 7-3 victory over SAIT, and scoring his first ACAC goal in that game.

Briercrest is glad to have Alex as part of the hockey program and wishes him every success in his future endeavours.
