Women’s Volleyball sweeps Lethbridge in four high-energy sets

Briercrest women’s volleyball came into Saturday’s match in hopes of sweeping Lethbridge for the weekend.

Briercrest Women’s Volleyball started off strong and ended strong resulting in defeating Lethbridge in four sets (25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-14).

Lethbridge started off the game by taking an early lead. Briercrest responded by battling back hard, resulting in Lethbridge taking a timeout at 9-9. Briercrest came back even more energized and took the lead. Lethbridge felt the pressure and called timeout again at 19-14. Briercrest carried their momentum through till the end and took the first set 25-18.

Briercrest came into the second set with the same high energy giving them an early lead. Lethbridge battled back but Briercrest kept a steady lead. Lethbridge called a timeout at 14-11 in hopes on gaining the lead. Lethbridge soon fell further behind giving Briercrest their second set win of 25-17.

Lethbridge came into the third set looking for a set win. Both teams battled point-for-point making it an intense set. Lethbridge started to slowly pull ahead but Briercrest soon battled back. Lethbridge feeling the heat called timeout at 12-12 in hopes on gaining the lead again. Briercrest called a time out at 16-13 for Lethbridge. Briercrest battled hard and made key defensive plays making it an intense point-for-point set. Unable to gain the lead, Briercrest lost the third set with a score of 25-23.

Both teams came into the fourth set with high energy making it another high intensity set. After lots of battling back-and-fourth Briercrest started to take a small lead causing Lethbridge to call timeout at 9-6. Briercrest maintained the lead and continued to put pressure on Lethbridge. Lethbridge then called timeout at 18-12 in hopes of gaining momentum. Briercrest kept making amazing defensive plays allowing them to win the set and last match of the weekend.

Ashley Zacharias was awarded Play of the Game by the women’s volleyball chaplain, Nancy Penner. Zacharias had one kill, one service ace and nine digs along with a game high of 39 assists. Sam Zacharias had game highs of 23 kills and four service aces along with Janae Rapley having a game high of 14 digs. Kathleen Bruce had a team high of two blocks.

Briercrest dominated in the stats category once again with 46-22 kills, 41-21 assists, 9-1 service aces and 62-49 digs. Lethbridge had 7-4 blocks.
