Concordia gets past Briercrest in Saturday's rematch

Posted: November 7, 2015

Briercrest took the ice Saturday against the Concordia Thunder, looking for the weekend sweep after last night's overtime victory.

First period play was tightly contested, with both teams showing commitment to defense. Jordaan Braun used his speed to split a pair of Concordia defenders and draw an early penalty, but the home team was unable to capitalize. Briercrest then killed off a couple penalties of their own, before a defensive scramble ended up in their net for a 1-0 Thunder lead. Brett Lafond provided the only highlight for the rest of the period, sending a Concordia player for an early line change as he crushed him into his own bench.

The second period was hard hitting from the get-go. Both teams struggled with being disciplined, and a cheap shot after the whistle sent a Briercrest player into the boards and a Concordia player to the box. Despite some good playmaking by BJ Pirus, Briercrest didn't manage to score and then took a penalty of their own to negate the advantage. Other than a huge hit on Concordia's Nathan Smith by Mark Langford, nothing more was solved at the end of forty minutes.

Josiah Friesen came close to tying things up seconds into the third as he blazed down the wall and had a great scoring chance, but Concordia managed to get a couple goals in the first seven minutes to up their lead to 3-0. A Thunder penalty midway through the period provided another opportunity, but the visitors would kill off the penalty and add a fourth goal at 13:25. The game seemed out of reach, but Briercrest didn't quit. Taylor Epp took a feed from Lafond and Joachim Hanberg, and rifled the puck past Concordia's goaltender. The home team was flying after this, controlling the play and getting lots of great chances. It didn't turn out the way they hoped though, and the visitors took the rematch 4-1. Players of the game were Taylor Epp for Briercrest and Jordan Hoffman for Concordia.
