Women’s Basketball battles hard but falls to Medicine Hat in Home Opener
This weekend Briercrest Basketball had their home opener against Medicine Hat along with Alumni Weekend. Alumni from throughout the years came to watch the game and to be recognized after the game.
The game started off very close and at a high pace to start off the new season. Medicine Hat started with a full court press, but Briercrest continued to make hard shots under the basket. Both teams battled hard making key defensive and offensive plays. The first quarter ended with a close score of 16-12 for Medicine Hat.
Medicine Hat came into the second quarter strong allowing them to increase their lead. Medicine Hat made important three pointers giving them a bigger lead. Briercrest was unable to catch up to Medicine Hat leaving them with a score of 23-42 and the end of the first half.
Briercrest came into the third looking to close the gap. Medicine Hat was able to carry their momentum forward into the start of the second half of the game. Briercrest battled hard throughout the quarter. The third quarter ended with a score of 67-37 for Medicine Hat.
Both teams came into the last quarter strong making it for an intense last quarter. Nearing the end of the game though, Briercrest felt the pressure and called timeout to gain more momentum. Unable to come back, Briercrest lost with a score of 84-51.
Hannah Klassen was presented Player of the Game by basketball alumnus Claire Richardson. Klassen had three rebounds, one assist, one steal and a team high of 17 points in the game. Amy Wanvig, Victoria Voth and Charity Mbugua had a team high of four rebounds. Wanvig also had a game high of one block along with Sara Karuth having a team high of three steals.
Medicine Hat dominated in the stats category with 44-36 rebounds, 2-1 blocks and 20-10 steals. Briercrest had 20-18 assists.
