Good Effort by Briercrest, unpleasant result. Portage completes the weekend sweep

Posted: October 24, 2015

A good night's sleep, mental reset, and it was back at it for Briercrest after yesterday's razor thin loss to the Portage Voyageurs. Briercrest came out with determination in the first period, getting good shots on net and creating early pressure on the Voyageur defence. A rare chance for the visitors in the first half of the period was stopped in spectacular fashion by Christian Mueller, before Jacob Baribeau drew a penalty on a solo rush. Briercrest would get some good chances on the power play, but didn't find an answer for Portage goaltender Kirby Halcrow. Less than a minute before the period ended, the Voyageurs made a great play to keep in a clearing attempt and capitalized to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

A hard hitting second period started with some good chances both ways, but a Portage power play resulted in a second marker for the guests. Moments later, Briercrest's defence pushed a threatening rush off to the corner, but got caught a little flat when the puck was thrown into the slot and one-timed in to extend the deficit. The home team continued to grind, and both Alex Bechtold and Josiah Friesen drew penalties with their hard work. The Voyageurs managed to hold the fort. Toward the end of the frame, Brett Lafond painfully blocked a shot and half limped, half skated on a breakaway while a defender raced in pursuit. He got off a good shot, but Portage goaltender Kirby Halcrow was stellar once again. Just like the night before, the visitors took a three goal lead into the second intermission.

Briercrest gave up an unfortunate early goal in the third, but refused to go down easy. Lafond rocked a Portage player, and Josh Anderson found paydirt not long afterward, swatting home the puck to make it 4-1. A puck off the crossbar by Ricky Seidel was as close as they would get the rest of the way. The Voyageurs added two more to make it a 6-1 final score.

Players of the game were Carson Johnstone for Portage, and Josh Anderson for Briercrest.
