Briercrest loses to GPRC, to play for ACAC bronze

It was an exciting day in Olds, AB as the Briercrest women’s volleyball team played in the ACAC semi-final against Grande Prairie Regional College Friday night. Briercrest ultimately fell to GPRC 3-0, and will play for ACAC bronze Saturday afternoon.

The first set was one for the ages with both teams fighting so hard for the victory that it had to go to extra points with Grande Prairie winning 29-27.

The second set was almost as exciting as and back and forth as the first set with Grande Prairie winning 25-23 and then Grande Prairie finished Briercrest off in the third set 25-18 to win the game 3-0 (29-27, 25-23, 25-18).

Briercrest won the serving battle with 7 aces to GPRC's 3, while also getting 50 digs to GPRC's 47. GPRC won the kills battel 39-27 and also had 35 assists to Briercrest's 23. Both teams had 6 blocks.

Top performers for Briercrest were ACAC Player of the Year Samantha Zacharias with a game high 10 kills to go with two service aces, nine digs and a block. Amanda Lundquist had a game high three aces to go with a team high 23 assists. Laura Cornelsen had a team high 11 digs and Whitney Zylstra had a game high 3 blocks.

Briercrest will now play for ACAC bronze against the loser of the game between Red Deer and Olds.  Game time is 1 pm (Alberta time) Saturday, Feb. 27.
