Women’s basketball falls to Lethbridge

Posted: February 20, 2015

This evening the Briercrest women’s basketball team played their second last home game of the season against the Lethbridge Kodiaks and while they were unable to win the game with a final score of 83-39, they played an aggressive game that was fast paced and high energy.

Briercrest’s Amy Wanvig was the first to put up points on the scoreboard. In a fast moving game, Briercrest was having trouble with turnovers while Lethbridge was shooting threes and playing tough defense. Brooke Olmstead played well in bringing up the ball, as the defense on her was definitely not an easy match. The score at the end of the quarter was 20-6 for the Kodiaks.

The Kodiaks played the second quarter with a full court press that brought them up. Tracy Frimpong drew in a foul and put on another point to her four points. Mallory Starkey had a quick steal that forced a turnover on the Kodiaks. Wanvig continued to go strong to the net and make baskets. The second quarter ended with the Kodiaks still up 45-18.

The third quarter was very intense for both teams and Briercrest played a stronger defensive game as well as their offensive ball movement being handled better. Abby Klassen was very aggressive this quarter and forced turnovers on the other team. Kodiaks held the lead with a score of 61-28.

Briercrest continued to play the aggressive game they were previously, Frimpong used her strength to push through the defense and get the ball in the net and Olmstead was able to draw a foul to put in her baskets. Briercrest had overall good movement on offense but were just unable to finish at the net. With just seconds remaining several fouls were drawn, just to exaggerate how badly each team wanted to win and fight.

The Player of the Game for the Lethbridge Kodiaks was Ali Cameron and for the Briercrest Clippers was Amy Wanvig with 1 steal, 1 assist, 13 rebounds and 14 points. Other Briercrest players to highlight were Tracy Frimpong who had 13 points and 6 rebounds, Brooke Olmstead had 3 assists and 3 points and Brittany Boschman had 5 points and 3 rebounds.
