Schellenberg leaves indelible mark on Briercrest hockey program

Manny Schellenberg has left an indelible mark on Briercrest's hockey program in his five years here. The Swiss native came to Briercrest in order to play high level collegiate hockey while getting his B.A. in Business Administration. Not only has he brought size and scoring to a team that has had a tough season or two throughout his tenure, but his leadership has helped guide the younger players.

Asked about what has made his experience here special, Manny said: "All the friendships I've built over my five years here are definitely my highlights. It's encouraging to play the game of hockey with a group of guys that share the same beliefs, are always here for you, and want you to succeed on and off the ice."

He shared some insights about what has made the hockey program at Briercrest such a good fit for him: "It's a team atmosphere I've never had on any other team before and it's like one big family. It's awesome - tons of fun."

Manny is tied for tenth on Briercrest's all-time scoring list, and led the team in scoring during the 2012/2013 season. At 6'5", he makes his presence known with his physical play yet at the same time has carved out a reputation of honour. While his protective nature has benefitted his teammates, Manny plays with respect for the game and his opponents - never using his physical stature in an unsportsmanlike way.

Manny has valued the way that faith and hockey are combined in Briercrest's hockey program. He looks to Philippians 4:13 for some words that speak to him daily: "I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me."

Briercrest is grateful to Manny for his commitment and achievement as a student and as an athlete. His five years here have been appreciated by his teammates and peers, and we wish him success in the future.    It is rumored that before he leaves town that he is planning on inviting the team over for a steak BBQ and it has the fellas pretty excited.
