de Waal brings speed and scoring to unique Briercrest hockey experience

Posted: February 7, 2015

It was a chance visit that brought second-year forward Dirk de Waal to the Briercrest hockey team, and he hasn't looked back. While visiting a friend here, Dirk found out about Briercrest's hockey program and was offered a chance to skate with the team. He talks about his enduring first impression.

"The Clipper team is a tight-knit group of brothers who are constantly looking out for one another and supporting each other spiritually and athletically,” de Waal explained. “This is something unique in the hockey world."

Dirk has appreciated his time as a student-athlete at Briercrest.

"Combining faith with hockey and school has taught me the importance of having my faith as the centre of my life” he explained. “Getting to know so many Christian peers and professors has also helped me to grow in my faith."

He brings speed and intensity to the team as one of the most consistent scorers. As one of the leading point-per-game forwards, Dirk excels at arriving at the puck in a grumpy mood, and counts as one of his strengths the ability to persevere when things aren't going well. Of the many highlights he's experienced at Briercrest, the atmosphere at the home opener vs. NAIT stands out.

Dirk hopes to continue playing hockey at a high level for as long as he can. Supporters of the Briercrest hockey team have appreciated Dirk's efforts here and Briercrest wishes him success in all his future endeavors.
