Frimpong leads Briercrest in close fought loss

Briercrest and Red Deer played a unique Friday afternoon game this afternoon and it proved to bea tight affair again as Red Deer swept the double header with a 76-65 victory.

Red Deer jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start the game before Briercrest forced two quick turnovers to make the score 8-7. An Amy Wanvig layup brought Briercrest their first lead at 9-8.  Wanvig continued to trade baskets with Red Deer until Tracy Frimpong made a basket and her free throw to make the score 15-11 for Briercrest. The teams continued to trade baskets with Frimpong continuing to score and build a 19-17 lead. Red Deer took the lead again off a three before two Krista Wiens free throws immediately gave Briercrest the lead again. Briercrest ended the first quarter with a 23-20 lead.

Red Deer hit two threes to start the second quarter with a 26-25 lead. Two straight Krista Wiens baskets restored a 29-28 Briercrest lead.  The teams continued to exchange baskets and the lead. Red Deer pulled away as the half ended, building a 44-36 lead. 

Briercrest cut the lead to 44-40 to start the second half, before a Red Deer three extended their lead again. Briercrest fought back to cut the lead to 55-50 before Red Deer stopped the run and forced a Briercrest timeout. 

Red Deer extended their lead to 63-50 to start the fourth quarter. The teams exchanged baskets, but Briercrest was unable to cut into the lead and Red Deer took the game 76-65. 

Players of the game were Kennedy Burgess for Red Deer and Tracy Frimpong for Briercrest. Frimpong had a team high 15 point in the loss. Amy Wanvig had a game high 14 rebounds to go with 14 points and Briercrest's lone block, Nicole Chenard had a team high four assists, and Brooke Olmstead had a game high steals to go with six points and 12 rebounds.

Briercrest outrebounded Red Deer 43-30 and steals 18-12. Red Deer had the edge in assists 22-7. Each team had a block

Briercrest's next game will be January 16 at Medicine Hat College.
