Posted: November 8, 2014

The men’s volleyball team took on Lethbridge for the second consecutive night, looking to come out with a win this time around. After a tooth and nail fight last night, taking the equally ranked Kodiaks to five sets, Briercrest aimed to have a similar style of play this evening. Both teams determined to come out on top to end the four way tie for second place in the ACAC South Division.

In the first set, both teams opened with impeccable play. Great hits coming from Dax Whitehead and Scott Gieske on the Lethbridge side alongside the return of Jachin Karg and Zac Ens made for a back and forth battle. Midway through the set, Briercrest playing full of discipline and strength, took a lead of 16-12. Ens continuing to administer power and efficiency continued this lead on the back of Karg’s serves and beautiful assists from setter Carter Reimer.  The blocking presence of Lethbridge kept them competing, however Briercrest took the first with a score of 25-21.

The second set begun with sharp serving from Carter Reimer and Jonah Johnson which gave way to Briercrest taking an early 9-4 lead. Lethbridge capitalized on a couple unforced errors by Briercrest and regained some momentum which afforded the second set to remain competitive. Briercrest maintained a much more attack focussed offense than last night, forcing them to have further control of the second set. In the final few points of the set, Ens with tremendous impact alongside sloppy passing by the Lethbridge team, led Briercrest to a 25-11 win.

During the third set, Briercrest once again took total control. Ens, Sawatzky and Wendel attacked ferociously alongside the excellent passing coming from libero Jonathan Phillips. Briercrest maintained composed and disciplined but rode on the momentum of their offensive contributors. Lethbridge was unable to answer in any aspect of the game and Briercrest took the third and final set by a score of 25-13.

The final score for the match tonight was won 3 sets to 0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-13) for Briercrest. Briercrest had 39 kills to Lethbridge’s 28, along with dominating 40-29 in digs, and 36-20 in assists.
