Briercrest softball finishes home portion of season with losses to Regina
The Briercrest softball team fell to the WCSA league leading University of Regina in their last two home games of the 2014 season Wednesday night.
After Kenzie Derdall walked the first batter and advanced her on a wild pitch she forced the heart of the U of R to ground out the next three batters to end the top of the first inning.
Derdall flew out to the Regina pitcher to start the bottom half of the inning before Alexis Ferguson and Sidney Holoien each hit singles to get on base. The next two batters swung out swinging and the score at the end of the first was 0-0.
After Derdall allowed a single and forced two outs Regina opened the scoring off a double to take a 1-0 lead at the top of the second. After the first Briercrest batter struck out Krista Wiens got to first on a bunt. Wiens stole second, but the last two batters struck out swinging and Regina took a 1-0 lead after two.
Regina opened the third with a walk and single before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. A single brought in both base runners to increase the lead to 3-0. Derdall struck out the next batter before a homerun brought the score to 5-0. The next Regina batter hit a double and then Derdall struck out the next batter before two straight walks to load the bases. She got through the inning by forcing a fly ball out. The first two Briercrest batters flew out and the final grounded out to end the third with a Regina 5-0 lead.
Regina had a homerun in the fourth to bring the score to 6-0, but Briercrest didn’t allow any other base runners. Jessica Bailey started Briercrest’s side of the fourth inning with a walk, but they were not able to advance her as the next three batters went out.
Derdall forced a ground out and strikeout to start the fifth inning, before walking a player and forcing a ground out to keep Regina scoreless. The first two Briercrest batters grounded and struck out before Derdall stretched out a double into a triple, but a ground out ended the threat.
Regina followed a lead off single in the sixth with a homerun to extend the score to 8-0. Derdall responded with a strikeout, before walking the next two batters, and then forcing a flyout. Two singles brought in two more runs, before Derdall struck out the last batter to keep the score at 10-0. The first two Briercrest batters struck and grounded out before Bryann Seib singled through the left gap before another ground out ended the sixth inning and the game 10-0.
Game two of the doubleheader Regina started strong defensively with a fly and ground out before Holoein hit a hard double and a Bailey single brought Holoein to third. Regina struck out the third Briercrest batter to end the threat. Briercrest pitcher Alexis Ferguson forced two straight ground outs to start the first before walking the next batter. Regina continued to get singles and walks and took a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Byann Sieb opened the second inning with a single before getting caught stealing second. The next two batters grounded out to end the top of the second. Regina’s bats came alive in the second and had a collection of singles to bring the score to 8-0 before Briercrest called a timeout to try to regroup. Regina continued hitting singles until Ferguson made a quick stab and throw to first for a double play to end the second at 12-0 for Regina.
Briercrest struck out and flew out their side of the third inning. Regina scored three more runs in the third to end the game 15-0.
