Briercrest alumnus Will Con will be taking the helm as head coach of the women’s basketball program.

Con has an extensive Briercrest resume which includes serving as captain of the men’s basketball team for two seasons, and as assistant coach of the women’s basketball team for one season. He went on to serve his student body as a residential assistant, student body board member and as student body president during the 2010-11 school year.

Athletic director Nigel Mullan is glad that Con has stepped into the role for this coming season.

“I am pleased that Will is stepping in as our women’s basketball coach,” Mullan said. “I am excited to have Will’s energy entering into the program as a head coach as I think he brings great ideas to the role.”

Originally from Tsawwassen, BC, Con has been part of the Briercrest College and Seminary community since 2008. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Theology from the College in 2012 and immediately began working towards an MA in Leadership and Management from Briercrest Seminary.

Briercrest has had a great impact on Con’s life.

“Most importantly, I met the love of my life at Briercrest,” Con said speaking of his wife Courtney. “I have been left forever changed because of my time and relationships at this school. The leadership opportunities given at Briercrest and the continuous push to become a ‘life-long learner’ will always be with me.”

Con is excited for the opportunity to coach the team this year.

“Coaching has always been a dream of mine,” Con said. “Briercrest asks a lot out of their students. It is exciting to see the achievements one can accomplish within a few short years at this school. I’m excited to see the journey of our women and what they will accomplish in one short year. Bringing a fresh strategy to the table, I’m looking forward to seeing how they will adapt it and make it their own. I know there is also a wealth of knowledge within the athletic department as well as other departments within the school. Briercrest is good soil and I’m ready to dig my roots down deep and draw as much as I can from this place.”

Con’s coaching philosophy centres around repetition and focus.

“Two things have been drilled into me,” Con explained. “The first is from my high school basketball team; repetition. bike games Kids game How many shots per player does it take to make a winning basketball team? The second comes from my second year at Briercrest; focus. I often look back on my coach of that year with great admiration. He always kept his emotions in check. I will be bringing repetition and focus to Briercrest this next year.”

He has a clear vision for the women’s basketball program.

“I expect my athletes to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly (Micah 6:8). This verse, in accordance to Matthew 18:22, will be the defining colours of our uniforms. Athletes are known for how hard they work by their blood, sweat and tears, to which I agree with, right down to their daily words and emotions. I expect great achievements from our athletes including the ability to show others how to act, love and walk out their lives with God at the centre. I expect that our students become “life-long learners” starting with taking a lifetime to learn these two verses.”
