Elly Wendel ACAC women’s volleyball player of the year

Briercrest women’s volleyball player Elly Wendel has been selected as the 2013-14 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference women’s volleyball player of the year.

The outside hitter was given the award at the annual ACAC women’s volleyball All-Conference banquet held at Grande Prairie Regional College Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014.

Wendel was also selected as ACAC First Team All-Conference and is a CCAA All-Canadian.

The second year player has had an outstanding impact on the Briercrest College and Seminary women’s volleyball team. In particular, she has elevated her game and her team to a new level this season. After going 6-14 the year prior to her arrival, Briercrest went 8-12 her rookie season and 15-5 this season, earning the team its highest finish since joining the ACAC in 1996-97.

The Biblical studies student played every game for Briercrest this season, leading the ACAC in kills, aces, aces per game, points and points per game. She also contributed strongly in both blocks and digs  finishing 12th and 22nd in the ACAC.

The Caronport native is the true definition of a student-athlete, earning CCAA National Scholar and Academic All-Canadian honors during the 2012-13 season.

Nationally she ranked third in the CCAA with 252 kills and 37th with 37 blocks.
