Third set comeback results in Briercrest victory

Posted: February 7, 2014

After claiming two straight sets against Olds, Briercrest came from behind in the third set, reigning in the Broncos to snag a 26-24 win. The other scores were 25-22, 25-22 and 26-24.

Serving proved to be a factor affecting Briercrest’s success in the first set. Olds claimed the first four points, 4-0, before Briercrest came back to match Olds 5-5. From there the opponents edged one another point for point until 22-22. Briercrest pulled ahead 24-22 and Elly Wendel served an ace necessary for Briercrest to finish off the set 25-22.

The second set opened very similarly to the first, the teams exchanged points up until 14-14. Briercrest got as far ahead as 17-14 before Olds came back to even out at 18-18. Many balls dropped just back of the blockers was the cause of forfeited points on both sides of the net. Olds came out of a time out to ease up 20-18, before Briercrest came out of a time out of their own, Starlet Peterson serving Briercrest back from 19-20 to 23-20. Olds began to retaliate, but only got as far as 23-22. Regan Kooyman came in for the remaining for points, and Olds hit the hanger at wrap up the set, 25-22, Briercrest.

Briercrest and Olds alternated points until 8-8, Olds surpassing Briercrest 10-8, and continuing to edge Briercrest 13-10. Olds moved up 17-12 and Briercrest continued to close in on Olds’ lead. They snuck in from behind 23-24, keeping Olds on edge. Wendel’s serving continued to ignite momentum as Briercrest caught up and eventually overtook Olds 26-24, concluding the first of their end of their season games with a 3-0 sweep.

Telania Snider was Olds’ player of the game with three blocks, one ace, six digs and nine kills. Brooke Peterson was Briercrest’s player of the game with 11 digs and one kill and rightly so as this weekend wraps up her time as a Clipper. Thanks for all you’ve contributed and all the best in the future. You will be missed!
