Exciting last minute gives Briercrest the win against SAIT

Briercrest claimed an exciting win against SAIT even as the Trojans made a surprising comeback in the second half. Nearly tied with less than a minute to go, Briercrest pulled off an exciting 88-84 win in the last minute.

James Wohlgeschaffen put Briercrest’s first points up, scoring off a rebound, 2-5. SAIT’s lead reached 13-4 before Briercrest answered back. Christian Sacoman and Josiah Cockrill  both dropped in threes, bringing Briercrest ahead 18-17 before SAIT scored one more, Briercrest finishing the quarter back 18-19.

Sacoman and Josh Dalzell opened the second quarter with back to back threes, and Cockrill followed suit shortly thereafter, putting Briercrest further up, 31-23. Briercrest momentum continued to build, rolling over SAIT defense to end the half up 50-35.

Briercrest’s comfortable 50-36 lead continued into the third quarter, solid offense leaving SAIT scrambling. Cockrill and Sacoman claimed the majority of Briercrest’s points with Penner and Wohlgeschaffen getting their two cents as well. SAIT scored periodically, very gradually closing in on Briercrest’s easy lead, still up at the end of the quarter 76-54.

SAIT continued to creep in on Briercrest’s lead in the fourth quarter, scoring a string of points to come back from 70-60 to even out at 72-72. Sacoman and Fox scored back to back threes to put Briercrest up 80-77, but the excitement continued, the score 82-81 for Briercrest with 55 seconds left. Cockrill came out of a time out to drain a three, giving Briercrest an 85-81 edge. SAIT got themselves into foul trouble in the last few seconds, Briercrest scoring their remaining points off of free throws, claiming the game 88-84.

Shayne Stumpf was SAIT’s player of the game with one steal, three blocks, eight rebounds, four assists and 21 points. James Wohlgeschaffen was Briercrest’s player of the game with a game high of four steals, a team high of two blocks, a game high 11 rebounds, 15 points sharing the team high of five assists with Josiah Cockrill.

Briercrest plays SAIT again tomorrow afternoon at 3:00pm in the Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium. Come support our clippers!
