Volleyball

The Men’s Volleyball team took the top team in the nation last weekend, taking the winning 3 sets over the course of the weekend. Red Deer had only lost 1 set prior to spending a weekend in Caronport, and the Clippers eventually fell in 5 sets to the Kings on Saturday in a nail biter. The 7-7 Clippers look to take on the 8-6 Vikings, and with 2 wins will take over 5th place in the ACAC, good for a bye past the qualifier round. The Clippers hope that Josh Senneker (who still leads the ACAC in serving aces) and Josh Wendel (2nd in the ACAC in blocks) can propel them to a sweep this weekend to avoid that qualifier round. The boys play in Camrose on Friday and Saturday.

The Women’s Volleyball team also took on the #1 team in the country as the hosted the Red Deer College Queens and couldn’t come out on top as they were swept 3-0 on Friday and Saturday in very close matches. The 11-5 Clippers travel to Camrose as well, and will take on the Vikings who boast a 6-10 record of their own. The teams are at opposite ends of their seasons as the Vikings attempt to enter qualifier rounds with some wins this weekend, while the Clippers look to jump into 3rd place in the ACAC with a sweep this weekend. With Elly Wendel leading the ACAC in kills (204) and serving aces (42) and Brooke Peterson shoring up the defensive side of the ball with 268 digs (1st in the ACAC), the Clippers are looking quite strong and look to take advantage of a struggling Vikings team. The girls play Friday and Saturday in Camrose.

Basketball

After splitting their games in Red Deer last weekend, the Men’s Basketball team looks to take advantage of a 4-12 SAIT Trojans team. On the back of Christian Sacoman’s 37 point night on Saturday, the Clippers got their 2nd win of 2014 and look to add to that this weekend as they host the Trojans in Caronport. Sacoman is 3rd in the ACAC in points per game with 20.44 and looks to lead the Clippers to an 11-7 record which would tie them for 3rd place in the ACAC, and great playoff positioning. The Clipper host the Trojans at 8:00 pm on Friday and 3:00 pm on Saturday in the Margret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium.

The Women’s Basketball team looks to rebound after 2 losses against Red Deer College by taking on a tough 8-8 SAIT Trojans team. Tracy Frimpong lead the way with 11 points in the loss to the Queens on Saturday, and the Clippers will look for a full team effort as they host a Trojans team that boasts Katie Beard who averages 9.9 points per game. The leading rebounder in the ACAC Claire Richardson (146) will have to be on her A-game as she defends against this Trojans team. The women play at 6:00 pm on Friday and 1:00 pm on Saturday in the Margret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium.

Hockey

After 2 euphoric wins for the Briercrest Hockey team, they face a harsh reality check as they travel to Calgary to face the 2nd ranked SAIT Trojans. After a 94 saves on the weekend, Connor Dobberthein was named the ACAC Online Player of the Week and sits 1 save behind the league leader. The Clippers look to Dobberthein to have another strong weekend in net as they face the ACAC’s 3rd ranked offence. With Dirk de Wall and Taylor Epp both boasting 5 points in 6 games this season and leading scorer Jacob Baribeau anchoring their power play and racking up 15 points, the Clippers are looking to build on a very strong weekend they displayed at home. The Clippers play in Calgary on Friday and Saturday.
