Huskies’s bite stings Clippers 67-44

The Briercrest women’s basketball team was left to lick their wounds as they got bit by the Keyano Huskies, losing 67-44 in a hard fought match.

Claire Richardson dropped in the first one to bring Briercrest first up on the board, 2-0. Keyano answered back and surged ahead 13-2 before Briercrest called time out. Tracy Frimpong came out and pushed through Keyano’s defense, driving in another shot, 13-4. Amy Wanvig scored Briercrest’s remaining point, ending the first quarter behind Keyano 20-6.
Despite a hard fought second quarter, Briercrest struggled to match Keyano’s continued momentum. The pendulum swung in Briercrest’s direction midway through the quarter jumping from 28-9 to 31-14 with only one interruption. Briercrest was unable to shut down Keyano as they came out after their time out and raced ahead 41-14 to end the second quarter.
Nicole Meyer was a thrill to watch, scoring eight of Briercrest’s 15 points in the third quarter which included back to back three pointers! Briercrest offense continued to put pressure on Keyano, exchanging points throughout the quarter ending on the downside of 56-28.

It was Meghan Friesen’s turn for back to back threes in the fourth quarter. Despite an solid effort offensively, Keyano was too far gone for Briercrest to catch them. Kennedy Sawatzky scored off a long pass down the court from Friesen and rookie Mikayla Benner scored the final point of the game closing slightly on Keyano, 67-44.

Players of the game were Keyano’s Sasha Warrington with 9 rebounds and 20 points, and Briercrest’s  Claire Richardson with a team-high ten rebounds, two blocks and eight overall points. Kennedy Sawatzky led with five assists and Nicole Meyer had three steals.

Briercrest travels to play Augustana next weekend January 17-18. Games are at 6:00pm on Friday and 1:00pm on Saturday.Â
