Briercrest too strong for St. Mary’s lightning storm

Posted: November 30, 2013

The Briercrest men’s Basketball team came into the 1st quarter saying they wouldn't let any lightening hold them back from a second win this weekend. Within the first five minutes Josiah Cockrill led the way with two 3-pointers and a deuce to put Briercrest up 17-9. Briercrest wasn't all offence in the first quarter as their defence was just as strong shown through Brandon Friesen’s sick blocks. To end off the amazing 1st quarter Briercrest’s James Wolgeschaffen sprinted with exuberant effort to put another two on the board. Briercrest led 31-12.

Going into the second quarter you could really tell that Briercrest chemistry with each other was flowing giving them a more comfortable lead compared to yesterday’s match. Similar to the 1st quarter Briercrest did not let off scoring with Lucas Mannes stepping up big and picking up six points. Briercrest increased their lead exponentially, going into the dressing for half-time with a twenty-eight point lead, 55-27.

Briercrest came right back at it after half-time to show St. Mary’s who’s boss in the Margaret P. Memorial Gymnasium. With a nice quick start, Friesen got two points plus the one on the free-throw after being taken down hard at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Friesen continued to pick up the pace throughout the 3rd and finished the game with 70% field goals made on 10 attempts. The Clippers ended the period with a beautiful 2-pointer with 5 sec. on the clock. Briercrest continued to lead 86-45.

The last quarter saw Briercrest hold strong to claim the second victory this weekend and to match the Briercrest girls’ basketball team with a complete sweep of the St. Mary’s Lightening. The Final score was 97-64. Players of the game were Briercrest #11 Lucas Mannes with 1 block, 9 assists, 2 steals, 18 rebounds and 15 points, and St. Mary’s #1 Josh Daniel with 2 blocks, 4 assists, 7 rebounds and 17 points. Briercrest shot 39-73 (53.4%) and St. Mary’s shot 23-80 (28.8%).
