Basketball

The Briercrest basketball teams will be looking to end the semester on a strong note this weekend as they host St. Mary's University College this weekend.

After splitting games against NAIT and Grant MacEwan over the weekend, the Briercrest men’s basketball (5-3) has moved down slightly in the CCAA National men’s basketball ranking to 12th place. In seven of the first eight games of the season Briercrest has faced the top teams in the ACAC. The only top-seven team that they have not tipped off against so far this season is the sole undefeated team in the ACAC, Red Deer College. It doesn’t get much easier this weekend as they face the eighth place team in St. Mary’s College (5-4) this weekend. St. Mary's is just one point behind Briercrest in the standings.

This will also be a very important weekend for the Briercrest women's basketball team as they host the only other remaining winnless team in the ACAC this season. Briercrest has had a difficult schedule to begin the year, facing six of the top seven teams in the ACAC in all but one game thus far. St. Mary's has played one more game than Briercrest and have been the lowest scoring team in the ACAC, so this is a great opportunity for Briercrest to build momentum entering the Christmas break.

The women open up the weekend Friday, Nov. 29 at 6:00 pm, followed by the men at 8:00 pm. The weekend continues on Saturday, Nov. 23 with the women tipping off at at 1:00 pm, followed by the men at 3:00 pm.

Hockey

The Briercrest hockey team will be ending the first semester against a familiar opponent, Portage College. The team will start the second half of the schedule against the team that they began the semester against.

Portage (4-9) sits in seventh place in the ACAC and just outside of a playoff spot. They have scored the second least amount of goals in the ACAC this season, so this could be an opportunity for Briercrest to play tight games and obtain some needed points in the standings.

Game times will be 7:00 pm on Friday, Nov. 29 and 3:00 pm Saturday, Nov. 30 (Alberta time). Both games will be played at the Bold Centre (8702 - 91 Ave.) in Lac La Biche, AB.

The games will be streaming on Ustream tv.

Volleyball

Both Briercrest volleyball teams ended the semester on a high note, and will now enjoy a bye week to end the first semester of competition.

As Briercrest women’s volleyball ends the fall semester they have been recognized as 12th best team in the most recent CCAA National women’s volleyball rankings. After splitting with CCAA ranked Grant MacEwan University to start the season, the team continued to sit near the top of the standings before ending the semester with two straight victories over CCAA number two ranked Grande Prairie Regional College. Those victories were the first losses of the season for Grande Prairie and pushed them down to seventh in the CCAA rankings. With a 7-3 record Briercrest is tied with NAIT for second in the ACAC, behind the only undefeated team remaining in the ACAC, CCAA fourth ranked Red Deer College. Women’s volleyball has a bye weekend to end the fall semester before travelling to Lethbridge January 10-11.

Briercrest men’s volleyball has won four straight games and for the second week in a row they maintain their 12th ranking in the most recent CCAA men’s volleyball rankings. After beginning the year with three straight weekends against three of the top four teams in the ACAC, Briercrest capitalized on their last two weekends and enter the Christmas break with a 5-5 record. Their next competition will be January 17-18 when they host ACAC fifth place NAIT.
