The Briercrest Basketball teams concluded their pre-season in Manitoba this past weekend, with the women making a clean sweep of their competition and the injury riddled men walking away with a split.

Women's basketball coach Chad Romanuk summaraized the weekend:

"Our exhibition weekend in Manitoba came to an end with putting two wins under our belts. Friday night we played CMU from Winnipeg, score was BC 73-CMU 50. Briercrest shot 40% from the field and had three players in double digits. Rookie post Amy Wanvig scored 10 points on 67% shooting and also pulled down five boards. Meghan Friesen also had 10 points and five boards, shooting 33% from the 3-point line. Tracy Frimpong had 10 points and four boards. Some excellent shooting from other guards with Lauren Jordan shooting 67% from the 3-point line and Krista Wiens 5-of-5 from the free throw line."
"Saturday's game found us on top beating Providence College 86-30. Briercrest shot 48% from the field and having four players in double figures. Veteran guard Meghan Friesen had 13 points shooting 46% from the field. Veteran forward Tracy Frimpong had 12 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Rookie Lauren Jordan also had 13 points and added three assists. Brooke Briscoe had 11 points shooting 57% from the field, including 3-for-3 from the free throw line."
"We are excited to take our wins into our season/home opener next weekend."

Men's basketball split their games over the weekend, getting a tight win over CMU before losing a close game to Providence.

Head Coach Rod Adrian summarized the weekend.

"It was a high scoring affair, 102-96 for Briercrest, but it wasn’t pretty.  In front of a packed gym with many Briercrest supporters we let a 20 point plus lead slip away after a challenging day, some internal and external obstacles, and some injuries.  We were led in scoring by Lucas Mannes with 32 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. (60% TS%)  Josiah Cockrill had a “breakout” game and notched 20 points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Christian Sacoman shot the lights out with an 87% TS% making 12 out of 18 total shots which added up to 18 points.  (6-9 FG, 4-6 3PT, 2-3 FT)  Brandon Friesen played big inside and fought for a double-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds."

"With a depleted line-up due to injury we faced a scrappy Providence Pilots team and suffered a 68-65 loss.  Brandon Friesen had his second double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  Josiah Cockrill added 15 points and seven rebounds, and James Wohlgeschaffen scored 14 points and nabbed nine rebounds."

"This concludes our Pre-Season campaign with a record of four wins and two losses.  I am pleased with our progression, and will have our work cut out for ourselves as we move ahead.  The whole team from redshirts to starters will need to be motivated and ready for our first Regular Season game this coming Friday.  I look forward to practice this week as we look to compete at a high level in preparation for Lethbridge College for our Home Opener and Alumni Weekend.

The basketball teams now head home to host Lethbridge College Oct 18-19. This weekend will not only serve as the Home and Season Opening weekend. but will also serve as the Briercrest Basketball Alumni weekend.

The women open up the weekend Friday, Oct. 18 at 6:00 pm, followed by the men at 8:00 pm. The weekend continues on Saturday, Oct. 19 with the women tipping-off at 1:00 pm, followed by the men at 3:00 pm.

This will be an exciting weekend as both women's teams have improved during the off-season and the men's teams last faced each other in the 2012-13 ACAC bronze medal game, with Briercrest prevailing.
