Hockey hosts MacEwan to close season; women's volleyball begins playoffs in Grande Prairie and baske

Briercrest hockey hosts Grant MacEwan to finish off the Briercrest 2012-13 home schedule, women's volleyball travels Grande Prairie for the ACAC tournamnet qualifiers, men's volleyball has a bye week, and basketball travels to Calgary to finish of the 2012-13 regular season. Hockey

Briercrest hockey will completing their 2012-13 season this season by hosting Grant MacEwan this weekend.

The team is coming off a weekend where they saw Jesse Chenard break the ACAC single season saves record. Chenard will be adding to both of his records (broke the career saves record the weekend prior) as he faces a Grant MacEwan team that is fighting to make it into the playoffs. Grant MacEwan is four points behind Keyano for the final playoff position and Briercrest will be looking to play spoiler as a tie will disqualify them from the playoffs.

Jesse Chenard and Mike Fischer will both be recognized on Friday night before puck drop for their contribution as graduating players.

Game times are 7:30 pm on Friday and 2:00 pm Saturday. Both games will be played at the Barkman Arena. Games will also be broadcast online at http://www.sportscanada.tv/index.php/ccaatv/acactv Also, be sure to "like" Briercrest Hockey for photos and updates.

Volleyball

Briercrest women's volleyball will be travelling to Grande Prairie to compete in a four team qualification tournament Feb 15-16. They will take on the King’s University College at 8:00 pm, with the the winner qualifying for the ACAC Championships. The winner will face  the winner of the SAIT and Grande Prairie match the following day, Saturday, at 1:00 pm for seeding at the ACAC Championship Feb. 22-23 at Red Deer College.

The men's volleyball team will have a bye-week before travelling to Fort McMurray for the ACAC Championships Feb. 22-24 as the fifth seed.

Basketball

Briercrest basketball concludes their 2012-13 regular season in Calgary where they will face the St. Mary's University College Lightning.

The Lightning (1-17) are directly behind Briercrest (3-15) in the standings and two wins will put Briercrest into a tie with Red Deer for 12th place and only two spots outside of a playoff position. The teams are fairly evenly matched on paper with Briercrest having the sixth best offense in the south with just over 48 points per game, while St. Mary's is behind them with just over 40 per game; Briercrest is ranked fifth in defense allowing just under 69 points a game, while St. Mary's allows 69 a game.

Men's basketball (17-1) have clinched first place in the ACAC and maintain their CCAA number one ranking for the third weekend in a row. They will face a first year St. Mary's team (5-13) that boasts one of the top scorers in the country in Randal Mosca and have surprised quite a few people by defeating several playoff teams this season.

All games will be played at the Glenmore Christian Academy (16520 - 24 St., Calgary). The women will hit the floor at 6:00 pm on Friday and 1:00 pm on Saturday, while the men will follow at 8:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
