Sweep of Olds vaults Briercrest into second place in the ACAC

With their sweep of Olds College, coupled with SAIT’s sweep at the hands of Red Deer, Briercrest has moved into second place with a record of 13-1, and are riding a 12 game winning streak.

On Friday, January 18, Briercrest defeated Olds 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-22). They were led by Player of the game Josh Wendel who had a team high six kills, one dig and a game high three blocks.

Coach Nigel Mullan was pleased with Wendel’s performance, “he was very efficient and led the charge Friday night.”

Briercrest held the edge in serving and blocks, having three aces to Olds’ zero and seven blocks to Olds’ four. Olds had the edge in kills and digs 28 to 26 and 17 to 11 respectively.

Olds put up more of a fight Saturday night, but Briercrest came out on top with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 17-25, 25-19) victory.

Steve Guenther was Saturday’s Player of the game with a game high 13 kills and two service aces to go with four digs and one block. Pablo Acuna led the way for Briercrest with six digs while Scott Willms and Cody Quiring each had a game high three blocks.

Briercrest held the edge in kills and blocks with 39 to Olds’ 36 and 10 to four respectively. Both teams had two service aces and Olds held the edge in digs with 31 to Briercrest’s 21.

Coach Mullan shared his thoughts on Briercrest’s performance over the weekend.

“I was pleased with their scrappy play and their execution improved as the weekend wore on,” Mullan said.
