Caronport High School (CHS) students raised funds for missions and they did it with tacos.

This year CHS students sponsored two children from Compassion Canada -- Lizeth from Mexico and Eli from Indonesia. Last year, when CHS only sponsored Lizeth, they created Taco de Mayo, a Mexican-themed party where they raised funds by selling taco-in-a-bag to help support Lizeth during the summer months when school was not in session.  The event was such a success that they held it again this year. 

“Originally it was held on Cinco de Mayo (The fifth of May—a Mexican holiday celebration) as a birthday party and fundraiser for Lizeth,” Dale Fehr, CHS teacher and SLC sponsor said. “The Spanish origins didn’t work when we got Eli from Indonesia but taco-in-a-bag was (still) ideal for a fundraiser.” 

“The goal was “to raise $250, enough for the summer months,” Emma Tunall, SLC vice president, said. 

At the evening’s end, the money raised from students totaled just over $392.

Businesses also showed their generosity toward this project.

When Tunall sent a fax to Old Dutch Foods telling them about the party to support the Compassion children, the company responded by donating half of the taco chips needed for the event.

 

Besides purchasing taco-in-a bag and a drink for $3.50, students also enjoyed a movie and games to go with the party theme.

“It was wonderful, especially the food!” Kiera Mitchell, Grade 10 student said.

“It was awesome – wish I had seconds,” Grade 10 student Jessica Hoff agreed.
