Briercrest begins search for new president
The search has begun for Briercrest College and Seminary’s next president.
Dwayne Uglem, Briercrest’s fifth president, notified the board of directors in November that this term as president of the school will be his last.
What started as an “interim” position, evolved into a passion for the president. He will complete his ninth year as president in June 2013.
“When the interim label was removed, I have always lived with the expectation that at the heart of this opportunity was the great privilege readying the school for a new day,” Uglem said.
The president has worked hard to move Briercrest toward expanded degree granting status within the province of Saskatchewan.
“I understand that an essential part of leadership is preparing for those who will follow you. BCS is ready for a new President that will help Briercrest seize the opportunities that await and the new scope of influence that is before us. This is a great day. I am humbled that I had a part in the journey to this day. Tomorrow has remarkable opportunity for us to build a continued legacy of outstanding Christian education.”
Because of Uglem’s character and his work at the institution, the board was reluctant to accept the president’s resignation.
"Dwayne is somebody that is passionate about the school, he’s passionate about God. He centres everything he does in what Christ has done for him,” Search Committee Chairman Harv Adrian said.
Adrian will be tasked with leading the committee that will be searching for the sixth president. He understands the enormity of the task, but he is confident that God is preparing the right person for the job.
“I’m sure that God has somebody for the school that can lead this school into a university that is Christ-centred and looks to the future of building leaders in our churches and around the world.”
Board chairman Glen Werner sees the next president continuing to build on the strong foundation laid by previous presidents.
“It means building on our past; we don’t leave behind our past. We have a heritage that is going to continue to be there,” he said. “We are going to continue to have a biblical theological base that we are going to work from. We are going to continue to have a heritage of building Christian character and a Christian worldview. That comes from our past; those are the elements of our past that we are going to build on.”
Uglem is grateful for the support he received during his term as president.
“I have appreciated the Board’s support and the privilege they extended to me to lead Briercrest for these nine years,” he said. “Two terms of service as president has been my intention for some time. Briercrest is a remarkable ministry – and the presidency has afforded me a view point to appreciate the scope of influence Briercrest has had around the world.”
