RSS feeds

What is RSS?

RSS is a xml-based file format that is used by web publishers to distribute their content. An RSS feed contains the most recent content from the website and is updated when the website is updated. When a user subscribes to an RSS feed, they are able to read the most recent updates across the entire site in one centralized location. Additionally, using a feed reader, users can subscribe to several feeds and monitor the changes of several different sources in a convenient fashion.

How are RSS feeds used?

The most common way to read an RSS feed is using a program known as a feed reader or aggregator. These programs allow you to quickly scan hundreds of headlines. There are many programs available, and most of them are free downloads.

What is podcasting?

A podcast is an RSS feed that is used to distribute audio files. When a user subscribes to a podcast using iTunes, they receive a listing of the audio files and are able to directly listen to each one. If a new audio file is added to the podcast, iTunes will automatically download the file. This allows users to have the latest audio content delivered directly to their desktop.
