I sincerely hope that this past weekend was a refreshing time in some way. Rest is a good thing; God rested. Work is a good thing; God worked – we work. Work is not a result of the fall. Work is a gift and a responsibility for humans. And so we live out this rhythm of work and rest. We rest for work accomplished – but we also rest to prepare for the work ahead of us.
One of the verses which I committed to memory as a young follower of Jesus was 1 Corinthians 10:31, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Rest to God’s glory! Work to God’s glory! The focus is not so much on what we do, but for whom we do it. We do everything we do for God. So, when you think of the list of tasks in your “in box”, the memos on your desk, the calls you have to make, and the hard conversations you have to have this week remember you are doing it for God. Today, determine not to live to please “man”, or a supervisor, or a constituent, or a supporter, or a student, or even a family member. Live, work, and rest to please God; to make God smile; to reflect the intrinsic worthiness of God…and you will be living the way God has called us all to live.
