Clipper Soccer Program
Who can play?
The men’s and women’s soccer program at Briercrest College and Seminary provides an opportunity for students from a wide variety of cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds to unite together through a passion for God and a passion for “the beautiful game”—soccer. We invite students with diverse skill sets and a commitment to the Lord to try out for the team.
History
Successful individuals will join a group of new and returning students who participate in this club, which has been an integral part of the BCS experience since 1973. Over the years, the team has known success in a variety of contexts, including representing PAC at the CCAA Nationals on two occasions during the 1980s while PAC was part of the CCAA. This tradition of keen competition and sportsmanship has continued, and in recent years, both the men’s and women’s teams have placed consistently within the top two teams of the Prairie Athletic Conference, the latter team having won the top ranking in two out of the last three seasons.
Soccer and ministry
Briercrest College and Seminary provides a unique opportunity for students to integrate their faith with their athletic talents and interests. The soccer program is run as a club, with students paying minimal fees that cover the majority of the teams’ expenses. Members of the soccer clubs are encouraged to participate in a weekly joint Bible study for the purpose of mutual fellowship, exhortation, and support. Each year, a volunteer chaplain provides spiritual nurturing to the members of the teams on a corporate and individual basis. The teams are challenged to honour and serve God through their particular avenue of sports ministry in the internationally acclaimed game of soccer.
In addition to the short outdoor season at the beginning of the school year, the students’ main venue is within the indoor league of the PAC, which runs primarily between January and early April. Players who wish to join together to enter teams into the local Moose Jaw Futesol league between late October and March are strongly encouraged to view this extracurricular involvement as a unique ministry opportunity among individuals from all over the world who have come to Moose Jaw to live and work.
Ultimately, those who play the “beautiful game” in this prairie province at Briercrest College and Seminary learn to grow in their relationships with each other, with their sport, and—most importantly—with the Lord.
