After shutting out NAIT 3-0 in both games last weekend, the Briercrest Women’s Volleyball team is riding high and rode straight into 4th in the ACAC and 2nd in the South Division. The women stayed at ranked at 11th in the CCAA, but look to tie Red Deer for first in the ACAC with 2 wins this weekend. The Red Deer Queens come into this weekend having only lost 4 sets and will prove to be a very tough test for the Clippers. Freshman Sam Zacharias has been a pleasant surprise for the Clippers when 3rd year Left Side Mikayla Reinhart went down with an ankle injury prior to last week’s contest with NAIT. Zacharias stepping in and earned Player of the Game honours on Friday with 13 kills, 5 serving aces and 11 digs in her very first ACAC start. The Clippers will look to Zacharias to continue her strong play along with Elly Wendel who is 2nd in the ACAC in kills per set with 3.4.
The Briercrest Men’s Volleyball team also shut out NAIT 3-0 in both games this past weekend, however, they fell out of the top 15 in the CCAA rankings. The Clippers will look to their A game when they take on the #1 CCAA ranked Red Deer Kings. The Clippers record of 7-5 may not accurately represent their skill as they’ve only lost 21 sets which is good for 4th in the ACAC. The Kings, however, have only lost 1 set and look to continue their domination against the Clippers. A Briercrest win would have huge ramifications on the ACAC standings as it would bump the Kings down to 2nd in the ACAC and move the Clippers one step closer to the National Title. The Clippers will look to the hot hand of Josh Senneker who is leading the ACAC in serving aces with 26 and Josh Wendel who is 2nd in the league in blocks with 45. The Clippers defense will be severely tested in this highly anticipated battle.
These games take place this weekend in the Margret P. Reimer Gymnasium; the women play at 6pm and 1pm on Friday and Saturday respectively and the men play at 8pm and 3pm.

2014 has not been kind to the Briercrest Women’s Basketball team as they have gone 0-4 to start the new year but look to turn things around against 5-9 Red Deer College Queens. The Clippers will look to have a complete game against the Queens with defensive star Claire Richardson leading the ACAC in blocks with 23 and Amy Wanvig who is 3rd in the league with 169 points (11.43 per game) leading the way for the Clippers.
The Briercrest Men’s Basketball team has struggled entering 2014 going 1-4 in very close games against good opponents. The road does not get any easier, however, as the Clippers travel to Red Deer to face the Kings who have only lost 1 game all season, going 13-1 so far. The Clippers are hoping that 4th year Brenden Friesen can continue his strong defensive presence as he is tied for 2nd in the league with 12 blocks on the year. Briercrest now looks to import student Christian Sacoman to hold down the offense as he is 3rd in the league in scoring with 281 points (20.07 per game).
The basketball teams will face off against the Kings and Queens in Red Deer at 6pm and 8pm on Friday and 1pm and 3pm on Saturday.

No one ever said that hockey was an easy sport, and the Briercrest Clippers are understanding that full well this season. The team is 2-20 this season under 1st year interim head coach Lloyd Friesen but are looking forward as they develop many young players in their program. This weekend the Clippers host 11-7 Grant MacEwan and look to compete hard against the 5th ranked team in the ACAC. Briercrest will look to strong goaltending to keep them in contention once again as Connor Dobberthein leads the league in average shots faced per game at 40.1. Dobberthein boasts a 0.882 SV% which is impressive considering the 522 saves he has made in his 13 games of play. Leading scorers (and freshmen) Josh Anderson and Jacob Baribeau hope to ignite a Briercrest offense that will face the 5th worst defense in the league in the Griffins.
Briercrest will take on Grant MacEwan in the Barkman Arena at 7pm on Friday and 2pm on Saturday.
